CMWAC began in the 90s with our Founder Ahlay Chin and her mission to end the stigma of mental illness in the Chinese - Canadian community.
After a tragedy occurred with a murder-suicide caused by mental illness, her community was shook.
"Mental illness was considered a weakness in character."
- Ahlay Chin, Founder
What the community needed was education about the topic of mental illness and treatment options accessible to them, particularly in Chinese.
So the CMWAC (at the time Chinese Mental Wellness Association of Canada) was founded.
Eventually, the CMWAC changed its name to the Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada and broadened its goals to the general promotion of mental wellness and community empowerment.
Today, CMWAC continues its educational campaigns, events, youth and senior programs and also provides counselling services in English and Chinese.
Most recently, our Founder Ahlay Chin was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Award for her community work. Click the button to read the news article about the award.
